Studying communication somewhat has an affect on how I see things in life, especially the coincidences that made me think. Are they merely coincidental or meant to mean somethingelse ? (read : some form of communication). I reckon the former is usually perceived as having better implications on both personally and socially... as we tend to avoid any heavy thinking, and socially a person who thinks less complicatedly is somewhat more acceptable , right? If later is the choice, we'll usually hear "come on! don't think too much"... thus it gained its logical inference through the society, so to speak.
Communication is basically defined as getting your meaning to be understood by who you're saying (doing) it to. the bracketed word refers to the non-verbal type of communication that is somewhat hard to understand, but tend to repeat if it's poorly understood. Sometimes to avoid any miscommunication we choose to ignore it, and expect a clearer verbally articulated type of communication (read : we expect people to say it or just write it or at least spell it).
But what if, the expectation will never be met? i.e. the part who's conveyung something to you is unable (this word is purposely used to differentiate with the word 'disabled') to fulfil your wish due to undisclosed reason. Will you then initiatively try finding a way to understand it? or still expect it to be conveyed in the means that you normally use? or even try to avoid and finding a way to exit (the communication) ? ... then maybe it'll depend on how relevant it is to you. the more you need it, the more you likely try to understand it.
But... in communication we also learned the concept of 'salience'. it's not 'silence', or 'science' ...it's salience. it is about how easy you could access your own mind of a certain memory. the higher the salience, the easier it is for you to notice, thus you remembered it. but to know a salience(y) of a certain memory is based on how much trigger is needed for you to remember it, meaning the harder it is to remind you of a certain thing, the lesser the salience of that thing in your mind. at least that's how i understand it. please correct me if i'm wrong.
Therefore, those with past traumas are more likely to be easily reminded about the meaning of that disaster to him/her. but sometimes the outcome varied to different people in different occasion. some take pride in witnessing one, some was amazed in experiencing it, some thrilled to have more, some move on and ignore, but some are deeply fall in consciousness trying to understand of what happened. but what is the correct response? some disasters somehow understood differently by different people and everyone is entitled to make meaning of it. but what is IT?
If you notice, no great civilization survives back then. The powerful Egypt was destroyed by drought and locust, unexpectedly the rich and lavish kingdom is tackled ironically by famine and disease.
Within our land, in Pulau Jawa, lays the Great Candi Borobudur which in fact was in ruin when it was found. In Wiki it was said that even the name was given by the founder Sir Stamford Raffles. No inscription pointing any hint on what's the real name of that place, or was it even a temple back then. No one survived to tell the story of the beautiful building. Wonder why? Nobody knows. Most information regarding the building was all based on latter-made theories. this building was said to have stood on what once a lake (much like Angkor Wat then) and built on a bedrock of a hill. There was a village nearby named Boro , thus the name Borobudur. follow this link for more http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Borobudur
Search on how the pyramid was found. It was re-discovered too.
Why now? Why only recently it is discovered? Interestingly, why suddenly the high interest of such buildings when in fact it was abandoned by the people before us back then? it's even capable of drawing people from around the world. A mere sightseeing? Probably some would answer, it is the effect of advertising and the rise of travel industry. But then, it is as if the industry created the object, while it has stood there thousands of year ago. Had the interests remained high, someone would've passed the story for generations and stood to defend it, and we don't need archaeologists to explain.
Now back to how our mind works. Coincidently this phenomenon coincide with disastrous events that's been happening recently. I'm poised to think that the timing isn't coincidence, it is made so, so that we think of something. I bet you know what I'm thinking. And I'm just gonna let you be you, making meaning of these series of events yourself.
And, in the basic model of communication, as response/feedback isn't as what expected by the sender, usually the message will be repeated. the harder you get the message, the harder the next message will get to you. I suggest , take initiative to think about what have happened.
But then, this is just a ponder, no other means intended. In God All Knowledge Resides.
